“Making Psychology Accessible to Everyone”

Do you have concerns your teenager is dissatisfied with their body image?
Are their signs that they may not be eating the correct food they nutritionally need?

Body image in today’s society is something that has become a focus for many teenagers, due to increased exposure to popular culture. Bullying or criticism about how you look, what you wear, and body type is a significant stressor in the teenage years. Parental conceern is growing as many teenagers show signs of being unhappy with their body. How a teenager perceives their body, and how their body actually physically appears can be two very different things. This is a red flag when it comes to potential eating disorders.

CHECKLIST TO DETERMINE IF YOUR TEENAGER IS DISSATISFIED WITH THEIR BODY, AND MAY BE ON THE PATH TO AN EATING DISORDER

IF YOU CHECKED MORE THAN HALF OF THE ABOVE, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

It is apparent that there is reason for you to be concerned that your teenager may be feeling shameful about their body image and may be altering their eating habits to ‘look’ a certain way. Eating disorders evolve from the teenager’s mental state and their way of thinking, where they experience unhealthy thoughts about their body. Other symptoms such as perfectionism and low self-esteem can also be prominent with eating disorders, so it is imperative that you as the parent, seek additional support and assistance for your teenager.

Our expert Adolescent Psychologists can work with both you and your teenager to understand the thoughts and feelings they are experiencing, and develop new thought patterns and strategies to better their future.
